This is an encaustic painting, which is made by using encaustic medium and pigment heated to 200 degrees. Each layer must be fused to the layer beneath with either a heat gun or propane torch. This gives the viewer the opportunity to see through the layers.

An encaustic painting made with layers of 200 degree wax, hand painted papers embedded in the layers and gold leaf sprinkled across the top. Encaustic paintings are made by layering colors of pigmented encaustic medium. Each layer must be fused to the other with either a heat gun or propane torch.
 This layering allows the viewer to see down deep into the painting.
